   Richard Smith (Edward Everett Horton) is a married lawyer, but he has a penchant for seducing women. When Richard meets Felix (also Horton), a comedian who looks exactly like him, the two hatch a plan. Richard will allow Felix to impersonate him on stage if Felix is able to convince Richard's mother-in-law that he is actually Richard. Meanwhile, Richard tries to seduce Felix's wife (Laura La Plante), and Felix fools Richard's wife, Madeline (Esther Ralston), into sleeping with him.

    After the death of her famous opera-singing aunt, Paula (Ingrid Bergman) is sent to study in Italy to become a great opera singer as well. While there, she falls in love with the charming Gregory Anton (Charles Boyer). The two return to London, and Paula begins to notice strange goings-on: missing pictures, strange footsteps in the night and gaslights that dim without being touched. As she fights to retain her sanity, her new husband's intentions come into question.

 In the Old West's Tiny Town, Bat Haines ("Little Billy" Rhodes) pits two ranching families, the Lawsons and the Prestons, against each other by stealing their cattle and blaming the other family for the thefts. Haines blackmails the sheriff, who is an ex-convict, into taking no action, then attacks a stagecoach carrying Nancy (Yvonne Moray), the niece of Tex Preston. Nancy is rescued by Buck Lawson (Billy Curtis), and the two fall in love. Billy then battles Haines to stop the feud.

 C. S. Lewis (Anthony Hopkins), the renowned author of "The Chronicles of Narnia" series, is a bachelor and Oxford University professor who spends his free time debating with fellow academics at a pub. Although he seems entirely uninterested in love, Lewis agrees to marry Joy Gresham (Debra Winger), an American writer who is looking to secure British citizenship. Their arrangement soon becomes a romance, and, when Joy is diagnosed with terminal cancer, their bond grows even stronger. .

 When David Smith (Robert Montgomery) concedes to his wife, Ann (Carole Lombard), that he's not quite satisfied with their marriage, the couple's relationship spins into disarray. In the wake of David's confession, Ann learns that because of a legal snafu, they're not actually married. Ann uses her freedom to try the dating market, where she's courted by Jeff Custer (Gene Raymond), one of David's professional colleagues. David's attempts to win her back lead to several humorous situations.

 During World War II, Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle (Spencer Tracy) leads the U.S. Air Force in a bombing mission over Japan. Doolittle and his men stage a successful attack on Tokyo, but most pilots run out of fuel while returning from the raid. Many are forced to land on Japanese soil, but Capt. Ted Lawson (Van Johnson), who has a pregnant wife at home, crash-lands in the sea off the coast of China. Stranded, Lawson must heroically endure a series of harrowing challenges to make it back home.
