Lieutenant Colonel Kirby Yorke (John Wayne) heads a cavalry post on the Texas side of the Rio Grande, defending settlers against Apaches launching raids from the Mexican side of the river. When Yorke's 16-year-old son, Jeff (Claude Jarman Jr.) --- who he has not seen since he was a baby -- shows up at the post as one of the new recruits, he treats him more harshly than the others. Things are further complicated when Yorke's estranged wife, Kathleen (Maureen O'Hara), returns to take her son home.

The U.S. government wants to build a missile silo inside a Tennessee mountain, but the backwoods hillbillies who own it refuse to lease it to them. Josh (Elvis Presley), a relative of the owners and a G.I. scout, is sent in to try to reason with them, but he soon runs afoul of his identical cousin, Jodie (also Presley), who hates his city-bred lookalike and everything he stands for. Meanwhile, troops begin moving into the area, and are seduced by a host of country beauties.

In 1943, a small commando team is sent to destroy huge German guns on the Greek Island of Navarone in order to rescue Allied troops trapped on Kheros. Led by British Major Franklin (Anthony Quayle), the team includes American Mallory (Gregory Peck), Greek resistance fighter Stavros (Anthony Quinn) and reluctant explosives expert Miller. Facing impossible odds, the men battle stormy seas and daunting cliffs. When Franklin is injured, Mallory takes command, and personal enmities spill over.
